What To Do If Your Pet Passes Away At Home
Ensure Your Pet Isn’t Sleeping Or Unconscious
It can often be difficult to establish what has happened to your pet. If it’s especially sudden, for example, you could find yourself struggling to work out if they’ve fallen unconscious or if it’s something sadly more permanent.
It can be upsetting, but you’ll need to check their pulse to work out whether or not they’ve passed away. Most animals have blood vessels in the neck, so a soft touch against their neck should help you to find a pulse. You can also squeeze their paw or ear, enough so they’d wake up if they were simply sleeping.
Lay Protective Material Beneath Them
A pet that’s passed away will typically have something left in their bowel or bladder, and that tends to be held in by a tensed muscle. When a pet has passed away, you’ll need to place something underneath them in order to make sure that their bowels don’t release and leave a mess.
What If I Have Other Pets?
You’ll need to let your other pets smell their friend for one last time. Otherwise, you run the risk of your deceased pet leaving and their furry family not understanding why. By allowing them to sniff, they can better understand the situation.
At the very least, this can offer the rest of your animals some closure.
What If My Pet Passes Away While I’m Not Home?
If you were out of the house when they passed away, you’ll need to find out how long they’ve been gone. If any of their limbs have become rigid due to rigour mortis, it will have been at least 3 hours.
At this point, you need to give us a call on 1800 789 567 as soon as you have said your goodbyes.
After too long the scent may be unpleasant, so hiring a professional to clean the area afterwards may be needed. While it may not be the goodbye you wished for, it is important to ensure your pet is looked after prior to any unpleasant odours that can make the moment even harder.
What If They Passed Away In An Awkward Position?
If your animal passed away in an awkward position, that’s okay. It was likely the most comfortable for them in their last moments.
We do ask that to make moving your pet easier, you please tuck their legs in slightly.
